Labour Force Trends - improvement in the labour market since last year

  • While the labour force experienced an increase, employment declined on PEI from February to March, 2010.

  • Compared to this period a year ago, labour market indicators showed significant improvements on the Island.

  • Both full-time and part-time employment levels were up compared to last year, and total employment increased by 4.7%.

  • The participation rate on the Island continues to rank among the highest in the country. In March 2010, the participation rate was the highest in the Atlantic region and tied with Manitoba as the third highest in the country.

  • All of the labour market indicators for youth saw improvement in the past year. The youth labour force increased by 700. While employment for youth increased, this increase took place entirely in part-time jobs, while full-time employment declined.

Employment and unemployment rate

Employment by Industry: Employment gains in services-producing industries.

There were 16,800 persons employed in the goods-producing sector in March; down by 1,600 compared to last year

  • There were year-over-year employment losses in forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas; construction and; manufacturing while the other two goods-producing industries remained stable.

The level of employment in the services-producing sector was 55,200 in March 2010, up by 4,800 compared to the previous year.

  • There were job losses in transportation and warehousing (-100); business, building and other support services (-400) and; information culture and recreation (-600).

  • Gains in all other service-producing industries totalled 3,600, more than offsetting employment losses in this sector.
