 June 2009*

Employment Continues to Improve in Southern Nova Scotia
Employment rose in Southern Nova Scotia for the third straight month.  The job gains have been primarily full-time.
June’s employment gains brought the unemployment rate down to 11.3 percent from May’s 13.2 percent despite a labour force increase during the month.  Labour force participation has risen steadily since January.
Employment this month is below last June’s level, but there are more full-time jobs this year.  The unemployment rate was 2.8 percentage points lower last June at 8.5 percent.
Employment peaked in July of 2008 and declined throughout the year.  It ‘bottomed out’ in January 2009 and we have seen some positive gains since then.  This trend resulted from full-time employment primarily.  Part-time employment, while undergoing similar declines mid-year 2008, has been relatively stable since December of 2008.
Overall employment has been following the usual seasonal pattern for Southern Nova Scotia in 2009 but at a lower level in each month than last year.
Both the Goods and Services sectors generated employment gains in June but job levels in each sector are still below those of last June.
