Employment Falters in November
- Despite the national economic downturn, employment levels in Halifax have been higher in 2009 than in 2008. However, the gap between current and previous year employment virtually disappeared as employment fell slightly between October and November 2009.
- While there was a significant increase in part-time employment, full-time employment experienced a large decline.
- The unemployment rate decline between October and November 2009 resulted from lower levels of unemployed persons, there was no employment growth. Employment growth in the first half of 2009 likely kept unemployed workers looking for jobs, but as employment weakened, unemployed workers began to leave the labour force.
- Employment in the Goods-Producing sector has continued to fall since the end of summer, with both Construction and Manufacturing contributing to the decline.
- Employment in the Service-Producing sector rose from October, but not from the typical increase in Retail Trade. Employment in Education Services was the largest contributor.
