ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR – Fabian Manning, Member of Parliament for Avalon, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced funding of $1.6 million to increase work opportunities for apprentices. This funding will expand the Targeted Wage Subsidies (TWS) program to encourage employers to hire apprentices who are having trouble obtaining work experience in their chosen field. “This funding is part of the commitment made by Canada ’s new Government to help train Canadians for the skilled trades jobs that will secure them a much brighter future,” said Mr. Manning. “This new funding will give apprentices valuable hands-on experience and training so they can move closer to finishing their education and becoming fully qualified tradespeople. It will also provide an added incentive to employers to hire young apprentices who they would not normally hire, and, of course, employer participation is key to a successful apprenticeship system.” The Targeted Wage Subsidies for Apprentices initiative is being implemented on a pilot basis until March 31, 2007, in order to determine uptake from both employers and apprentices. This pilot project is supported under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement. Targeted Wage Subsidies offer employers an incentive to hire persons with the expectation that the subsidy will lead to permanent employment. An employer’s proposal is evaluated on the quality of the work experience offered to participants, as well as the likelihood that the job will continue in the long term. Apprentices having difficulty finding work experience should contact their local Employment Assistance Services (EAS) office. Employers interested in receiving a wage subsidy for hiring an apprentice should contact their local Service Canada Centre (SCC). -30- This news release is available in alternative formats on request.
