PROJECT TITLE: An Institute for Professionals Using Centre-based Interventions with High Risk Families

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The purpose of this project is to support the development of effective interventions for high-risk children in centre-based settings. It will achieve this through the creation and delivery of a comprehensive curriculum and specialized training intended to increase the prevention and early intervention knowledge and skill of child care practitioners. The curriculum will cover various topics in order to identify children at risk for behavioral, emotional, social and developmental problems. Child care providers will also be trained in planning appropriate intervention strategies for high risk children and their families.

The anticipated outcomes include a bilingual training manual, various learning formats that will be used during the training workshops such as a video, case studies and expert lecturers, a compilation of strategies for interventions and references to additional information and resources.

PROJECT TITLE: Advancing an Early Childhood Development Agenda: Leadership, Partnership and Best Practice in Early Childhood Learning and Care Services

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The Canadian Child Care Federation, in collaboration with multi-sectoral partners, will develop new materials and processes that promote and support effective practice and build on and strengthen an overall synergistic relationship between early childhood education and care practitioners and key community-based stakeholders (including parents). Child care practitioners will become aware of current research and the implications for practice, understand the various documents and covenants related to child care and gain competence in participatory evaluation processes such as the Early Childhood Development Agreement, Social Union Framework Agreement and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The anticipated outcomes of the project will include development of articles and resource packages on research results and best practices related to leadership, partnership and evaluations. Training and train-the trainer models will be developed and delivered in areas of program evaluation, current research results and the various documents available to promote quality child care services and supports. Information sharing and dissemination of effective practices will create a more knowledgeable public on issues of child development. The project will also strengthen cross-Canada capacity in the early childhood learning and care delivery sectors.

PROJECT TITLE: Community Indicators Project: Early Childhood Learning and Care

PROJECT SUMMARY:

This project will work to raise awareness about issues related to early childhood learning/care services among the general public and foster links among the early childhood development sector. Two community reports, focusing on key indicators of early childhood learning and care and supports to parents, will be produced using existing data from recognized sources (i.e. Statistics Canada, the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, the National Population Health Survey, the You Bet I Carestudy, etc.).

The anticipated outcomes include reports reflecting input from planning forums and an online “discussion room” involving participants from the early childhood community in up to four provinces. The reports are expected to increase knowledge, understanding and support of early childhood learning and care services among parents, policy makers, child care providers, community groups, businesses, unions and the broader public. The bilingual reports will be available on the Campaign 2000 website and will be distributed to libraries, local governments, school boards and Campaign 2000 partners.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

This Project will provide an opportunity to build on work currently underway to develop potential new initiatives to support the role of families. It will provide comprehensive information to policy makers, funders and practitioners about the nature and scope of integrated services that are available to families in Canada through family resource programs.

The outcomes include: 1) identify practical factors that enhance or impede the integration of services within communities; 2) provide a broad overview of the state of integrated services in the field of family support: 3) increase the understanding of the role family programs can play as a catalyst for integration of services for families in their communities: 4) encourage ongoing support for effective integration of services through the development of an advisory network of practitioners with practical experience in community collaboration.

The anticipated results include a literature review, a national survey, in-depth site visits and a national symposium for policy makers and practitioners. A bilingual resource document on integrated services that outlines issues and describes models and lessons learned from the family support field will be produced, as well as a national online directory of individuals with expertise in different modes of collaboration. The Family Resource Program web site will be updated to reflect the section on integrated services.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

Through bulletins and web pages, this project will provide an opportunity for parents to connect across the country through network meetings and electronic print materials. This will enable parents to share their concerns, learn from each other, and strengthen their voice and ability to impact on child care policy development and decision-making. The project will provide governments access to informed parents able to communicate their perspectives for themselves and on behalf of their peers across Canada. It will broaden the knowledge and understanding of the parents’ perspective, and allow the sharing of that perspective in consultations at all levels of government.

The anticipated outcomes include the development of 1) information, resources and materials specifically addressed to parents; 2) a Parent Voice Network based on a community development approach; and 3) a Training Model and Resource Guide that will be piloted and shared with national and provincial/territorial child care organizations and groups.
