New mining programs offered at Yukon College: The newly established School of Mining and Technology now offers two new mining exploration programs that will address the employment needs of the territory’s booming mining and exploration industry. The Camp Maintenance Manager and Exploration Field Assistant programs will expand opportunities for Yukon residents, and reduce the need for employers to fly in workers from outside the Territory. The College collaborated with the Yukon Chamber of Mines, the Yukon Mine Training Association and Yukon First Nations to develop the mining-related programs.

Strong demand for housing in the Yukon: A lack of affordable housing is a serious problem in the Yukon, affecting emergency shelters, and the number of rental housing and affordable homes. Reduced housing options are also affecting local businesses, making it more difficult to attract and house workers to fill industry demand. Moreover, the lack of housing has begun to affect the local tourism industry as hotels fill up with workers, leaving little availability for visiting tourists.
